Martin Louis Phillipe was born into the lower nobility of Southern France. His father owned a small manor not too far from the growing city of Marsailles. His father was a good landowner, and kind to his serfs. Unlike other lower nobles, his father wanted Martin to have a good education, and so, he mostly grew up in a Catholic boys school nearby. Martin’s mother died when he was only eight, and by the time Martin was sixteen, his father died as well and Martin inherited the family manor. When he was 22, he attended his first royal court for the first time in Paris. During the court session, an assassin tried to kill King Philip IV. Only through Martin’s quick actions of tackling the assassin was the King’s life spared. For this, Martin was knighted.
Two years later, Martin was called into battle. During this battle, a pike impaled Martin. When Martin awoke on the battlefield, he didn’t know that he had died. He decided to go back to his manor. A friend of his, Pierre, had seen him impaled and die at the battle, and had told everyone in the nearby village to the manor that Martin had died. When Martin returned, the villagers treated him with fear and disgust. Martin knew where this was heading, and decided to leave before he was banished or killed. He traveled to Bavaria, where he met up with a man called Juan Sanchez Villa Lobos Ramirez. Ramirez told Martin that he was an Immortal, and what it meant to be one. He told Martin of the eventual Gathering of the last Immortals and told Martin of the Prize. Martin felt that he wanted to make sure that he would survive the coming years, and asked Ramirez to train him. Ramirez agreed and he trained Martin for nearly twenty years.
Martin finally decided he was ready to go out on his own, but Ramirez disagreed, knowing that Martin had a strong dark side, to kill and maim. Martin ignored Ramirez and left Ramirez’s care. Martin traveled all over Europe, finally ending up in the Middle East in the 1360’s. He met up with another powerful Immortal calling himself Azim. Azim was a master of the scimitar, and admitted to Martin after a time that he practiced ancient dark magics, to make himself stronger against other Immortals. Martin didn’t believe Azim at first, until Azim demonstrated some of his powers. He told Martin that his magics were fueled by rage, and that he could teach Martin how to be stronger as well. Martin agreed, already knowing the dangers out in the world faced by Immortals. Eventually, Martin turned from a good knight into a vicious killer. He became concerned with nothing but winning the Prize.
In 1455, Martin met a young woman named Alani. Martin was attracted to Alani, and loved the goodness in her. She had been the first person he had cared about in decades, and Martin finally fell in love with her, turning from his path of rage. He fled with Alani to China, hoping that Azim would not follow. Azim did, however, and the two fought a fierce battle. Both were badly injured, but before Martin could do anything, Azim mercilessly killed Alani. Martin passed out from his pain...and when he woke, Azim was gone, and Alani was dead. Martin felt so much pain and anger over her death. He knew he needed to repent for the villainy he had committed and swore an oath never to veer from his honor ever again. He also swore an oath to hunt down and destroy Azim, out of justice, and not revenge. Since that time, Martin has honed his skill with his katana, and made sure that he would always protect the innocent from the machinations of other Immortals as much as possible.
His name and face became quite known among many Immortals in the city, and he was a friend with most of them. Azim also returned during this time, and was finally destroyed. However, a little over two years ago, Martin was presumed dead, killed by another Immortal named Scrap. Oddly enough, he has returned to the city though, and he says he is the real Martin, and that the man who was killed was an impostor. Apparently he was kidnapped by an offshoot group of the Watchers, who wanted to rebuild the Sanctuary that was destroyed, to keep other Immortals from winning the Prize. So, they kidnapped him and multiple other Immortals. Martin isn’t sure how he woke up when he was sedated for years, but after he did, he escaped quickly.
